Vinyl flooring has become a very popular choice for flooring. It's no surprise, given its durability and wide range of design options. However, no matter how tough it is, it’s not meant to last forever. Vinyl flooring, unlike hardwood flooring, cannot be refinished.
So, is it better to restore vinyl flooring rather than replace it?
Regardless of how good or bad the condition of your vinyl flooring is, it’s still preferable to try to restore it rather than replacing it entirely.
First, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove surface dirt from your vinyl flooring; if one is not available, use a good quality fine-bristled broom. Remove any hidden surface dirt by getting into corners, nooks, and crannies.
Next, remove the surface film from your floor with a well-wrung mop and a solution of lukewarm water and 1 cup ammonia. Remember to keep your windows open to allow proper ventilation in your kitchen or bathroom. Before cleaning with ammonia, put on rubber gloves and a protective face mask. (For heavier dirt and wax buildup, use a stronger ammonia solution, or wash the floor several times with the lighter solution to remove grime.)
Then, remove tough, the embedded surface film leftover from waxy floor cleaners, dulling soaps, and trapped dirt, use a soft-bristled scrub brush.
Next, to remove excess liquid, rinse and mop the floor with plain water and dry it with an absorbent towel. Allow your vinyl flooring to completely dry.
Finally, use a mop and a manufacturer-recommended low-gloss floor sealant to seal your vinyl flooring.
